Reno to Wendover

Well, we're starting our trip up to Fargo for the graduation ceremony.  Started out early this morning and made good time.  Of course, it helped that my navigational skills were not called upon.  Get on I-80, get off and get gas, get back on I-80, repeat!  Did stop at a couple of rest stops to break up the trip and get some walking in.  At the first stop we saw the below sign which reminded me that DDE was largely responsible for the Interstate system.  A large part of it was due to his cross-country trip in the early 1900's with an Army detachment.  In Carson City, there is a metal sculpture which commemorates that trip.

It was a beautiful day and Nora Roberts made the trip go by quickly.  The last rest stop gave us a little more history on the pioneers, especially the Donner Party as they passed through Eastern Nevada.  We always learn a little more Nevada history as we travel.

One of the signs along the way said that if you looked one way and then the other, that was the maximum distance that a wagon train would make in a day.  Today we whiz across the state without thinking about the hardships the pioneers had to endure.  It was good to see the Humboldt River in full flow because of the snowy winter we had.  Normally, it's just a trickle, but today it was a full-flowing river.  Strange how that river shaped travel over the centuries - first the Indians used it, then the pioneers, followed by the railroads, and now the Interstate.

We're staying at the Montego Bay in Wendover.  Even though we're in Nevada, they recognize MST since the majority of their business comes from Utah.  Tomorrow, we hope to play golf at the local golf course if the weather is good.  We had great weather all the way across until we hit Peqod Summit just west of Wendover.  Then the snows hit and we went over the summit with snow and slush on the ground.  Then it was just rain and thunder for a few miles.

We'll keep you posted on our travels.
